Foreign Minister Meets UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva

Foreign Minister Mohamad A. Alhakim met with UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Mr. Filippo Grandi in Geneva on the sidelines of the 40th session of the Human Rights Council.

The meeting discussed the humanitarian situation in Iraq and stressed the need of Iraq for the efforts of the United Nations and humanitarian organizations because the legacy of the war on terror was very strong on the Iraqis and called for the importance of expanding the work of the UNHCR and providing more necessary supplies for displaced families , expressing thanks and appreciation for the efforts of the UNHCR teams in Iraq.

Minister Alhakim stressed that the reconstruction of the infrastructure of cities is very important for the return of displaced persons to their areas of residence stressing their need for hospitals, schools, and housing.

On his part, Mr. Filippo Grandi stressed the continuation of the work of the UNHCR in every effort to control the reception displaced persons, adding that we are providing support and assistance to displaced persons returning to their areas noting that we will continue to support the efforts of the Iraqi government in providing care for the displaced.
