Society of Petroleum Engineers Basra meeting a success

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) held a conference in the city of Basra in April. The end of the conference marked a successful follow-up to the previous SPE meeting in Istanbul in 2011. More than 180 attendees from over 50 regional and international companies were at the conference.

Waleed Refaay, Managing Director at SPE Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia, said "SPE's mission is to collect, disseminate, and exchange technical knowledge concerning the exploration, development and production of oil and gas resources, and related technologies for the public benefit; and to provide opportunities for professionals to enhance their technical and professional competence."

The conference boasted a wide range of attendees including representatives from ExxonMobil, Lukoil, Schlumberger, as well as British Petroleum.

The representatives discussed numerous issues facing the Iraqi petroleum industry including the question of flaring, water sourcing and management, amongst others.
