Foreign Minister Mr. Mohamad A. Alhakim received EU Ambassador to Baghdad Mr. Ramon Blecua on the occasion of ending his duties in Baghdad.
Minister Alhakim praised the qualitative progress in relations with the European Union, stressing the importance of strengthening it to serve common interests and opening the prospects of cooperation in various fields in addition to benefiting from European experiences, expressing his wishes for the Ambassador’s success in his future diplomatic missions.
The Foreign Ministry held a memorial service for its martyrs who were victims of a terrorist bombing in 2009.
The Foreign Minister laid a wreath at the memorial that the ministry held for this tragic incident, and delivered a speech in which he commended the martyrs, recalling the active role of Iraqi diplomacy in the fight against terrorism.
A tripartite meeting was held in Baghdad on 4 August 2019 and included Foreign Minister of the Republic of Iraq, Mr. Mohamad A. Alhakim , the Foreign Minister of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Mr. Sameh Shukri, and the Foreign Minister of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Mr. Ayman Al-Safadi to develop cooperation among the three countries in different fields in implementation of the decisions of the Tripartite Summit held in Cairo on 24 March 2019 between the King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, His Majesty King Abdullah II, the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Mr. Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, and Iraq’s Prime Minister Mr. Adel Abdul-Mahdi; to discuss ways of cooperation, coordination and integration among the three countries.
Iraq expresses its strong condemnation of the terrorist incident suffered by our brothers in the Arab Republic of Egypt, which claimed the lives of civilians and injured others.
While Iraq affirms its rejection of terrorism in all its forms , it stands with the international community in the face of terrorism, supports all good efforts aimed at eliminating extremism and violence, in addition to supporting the efforts of the Egyptian government in its actions to maintain security and stability of the country. Iraq states its readiness to assist in facing this threat to the lives of secure citizens.
President Salih met today with dozens of family members who lost loved ones during the infamous Anfal genocide of the 1980s.
Taking care to listen to all their concerns in the Al Salam Palace in Baghdad, the President stated clearly that this violence was a genocidal act aimed at the Kurdish people and will forever be a wound that is never fully healed in the hearts of all Iraqis. President Salih emphasized that no matter how painful, this time must never be forgotten. These types of crimes must never again be allowed to occur, and we must ensure the families of all those affected by this heinous crime are cared for.
Foreign Minister Mr. Mohamad A. Alhakim met with Lord Ahmed of Wimbledon, Secretary of State for Commonwealth Affairs and the United Nations at the British Foreign Office. The meeting reviewed the progress of bilateral relations between Baghdad and London and means of strengthening them to serve the interests of both countries.
Foreign Minister Mohamad A. Alhakim delivered Iraq’s speech at the Ministerial Conference to Advance Religious Freedom in Washington organised by the US State Department.
In his speech, Minister Alhakim stressed that the essence of humanity is the common factor among societies, pointing out that coexistence between religions in Iraq is a popular culture of the people, creating an environment of creativity in many fields, including literature, art and scientific research.
H.E. President of the Republic Dr. Barham Salih congratulated Sabean Mandaeans on the occasion of the Great Eid and the Mandaean New Year, on Wednesday's today, July 17, 2019.
His Excellency the President stressed, in a telegram on this occasion, the importance of promoting the values of love, brotherhood and participation among all components of Iraq and its specter, commending Sabean Mandaeans' role in building Iraq on the basis of freedom, equality and values of justice and democracy.
The Foreign Ministry strongly condemns the killing of a Turkish diplomat working in the Turkish Consulate General in Erbil Governorate and a citizen and the wounding of another in an assassination incident and expresses its close follow-up with the security authorities to find out the circumstances of the incident. Iraq and EU strongly affirm their shared commitment to peace and stability in the wider Middle East and call for the de-escalation of the current tensions in the region, reminding that the risks and the consequences may affect Iraq, the region and beyond. The EU and Iraq share a common vision for the region and wish to proactively support actions and initiatives to promote dialogue instead of confrontation, aiming to build a cooperative framework based on shared interests. Cooperation is the strongest foundation of a long-term regional security, stability and sustainable development. The European Union remains committed to work together with the Iraqi government to promote these values and is firmly of the view that the Iraqi proposal of a regional conference merits full support and engagement.
