Iraqi Birth Certificate

This section explains the requirements for obtaining an Iraqi Birth Certificate for babies born in the United States to an Iraq father. The Consular Section of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Washington, DC issues Iraqi Birth Certificates for babies born in the States that fall under its jurisdiction – Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia. For states that fall outside the jurisdiction of the Consular Section in Washington, DC please contact the Consulate that is responsible for your area for instructions and guidelines on how to obtain Iraqi Birth Certificates.

Requirements for Obtaining an Iraqi Birth Certificate:
  • Fully completed Iraqi Birth Certificate Application Form (the application is available in the Arabic language only).
  • Color copies of Iraqi Identity Cards (Ahwal Madaneeya) for both parents. If the mother is not an Iraqi citizen, a color copy of her foreign passport is required.
  • Original U.S. Birth Certificate authenticated from the office of the Secretary of State where the birth took place.
  • Copy of Marriage Certificate of the parents. If marriage is documented in Parent’s Iraqi Identity Cards, marriage certificate is not required.
  • Money Order in the amount of $15 (fifteen U.S. Dollars) payable to the Embassy of Iraq if the application is submitted within 2 months from the date of birth, and $23.5 (twenty-three US Dollars and fifty cents) if the application is submitted after 2 months from the date of birth.
  • Submit your application to the Consular Section of the Embassy of Iraq in Washington, DC in person or via registered mail, along with a with an addressed pre-paid return envelope that includes the sender’s name – Express, Priority, and FedEx is preferred.
  • The embassy is not responsible for any loss or damage due to any mishandling by delivery services.
