Secretary Kerry, Minister Zebari Reaffirm Strong Partnership Between US and Iraq

On October 31, 2013, Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari and Secretary of State John Kerry met to discuss a range of issues pertinent to Iraq and the region; and the mutual relationship between the United States and Iraq.

At the forefront of the discussion was the crisis in Syria and its impact on the region. Both sides reiterated the importance of finding a political solution and exchanged views on diplomatic initiatives to advance momentum towards the Geneva II conference.

Secretary Kerry offered support to the Foreign Minister for the recent steps taken by Iraq to strengthen relations with it's neighbors and other countries, including Kuwait, Jordan and Turkey. Both sides acknowledged the mutual interest of bringing stability to the region; and Secretary Kerry assured the Foreign Minister that the United States will continue to support Iraq's outreach efforts in this regard.

Secretary Kerry said he was pleased with the announcement of the national parliamentary elections in April 2014 and noted the importance and willingness of the United States and UNAMI to work with Iraqi political leaders to find common ground ahead of scheduled elections.

Finally, Foreign Minister Zebari expressed appreciation to the United States for its support and cooperation under the Strategic Framework Agreement and agreed that the Government of Iraq looks forward to continuing to work closely with the United States on the challenges shared by both countries.
