Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi sat down with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in New York to discuss the Iraqi government’s efforts to combat ISIL and bring peace and stability to the country.

In his first televised interview with international media, PM Al-Abadi emphasized the need for concerted international efforts to defeat terrorist organizations in the region and welcomed the international coalition’s recent airstrikes against ISIL.

PM Al-Abadi noted that he had taken significant steps to ensure that the new Iraqi government would be fully representative and would meet the needs of all Iraqis. He called on the United States and the international community to increase its support for Iraq’s fight against ISIL, saying, "Our forces are moving forward and, when they are moving forward, they need air cover, they need air support."
