Foreign Minister Meets with European Union's Counter-Terrorism Coordinator Mr. Gilles de Kerchove

Foreign Minister Mohamad A. Alhakim met with the European Union's Counter-Terrorism Coordinator Mr. Gilles de Kerchove on the sidelines of the fifth EU-LAS ministerial meeting in Brussels.

The meeting discussed cooperation in combating terrorism. Minister Alhakim expressed Iraq's welcome to any European efforts to help fight terrorism and reiterated that restoring stability and building infrastructure will contribute to stability and eradicate the roots and ideology of terrorism.

Minister Alhakim also stressed the importance of cooperation between Iraq and the European Union in the field of documenting crimes of Da’esh and eradicating terrorism, as well as cooperation in documenting evidence of smuggling of antiquities and funding of terrorist operations and also stated that the EU counterterrorism coordinator will help mobilize international efforts to assist Iraq through through Interpol and Europol.

Minister Alhakim also welcomed the readiness of the European side to implement a project linking the Iraqi border crossings with the Interpol network, and called for assisting Iraq in the field of capacity building through providing counter-terrorism courses.
