Iraq: Reconstruction and Rehabilitation in Conflict-Affected Cities

WASHINGTON, July 7, 2015 – A new World Bank project in Iraq will support the reconstruction of the country’s conflict-wrecked infrastructure and restore public services in municipal areas under Government control. The US$350 million financial assistance package, approved by the World Bank Board of Directors today, will contribute to Iraq’s efforts to rebuild state institutions and put the economy on the path to recovery in areas where conflict has subsided.

WASHINGTON, DC – The Atlantic Council’s Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security welcomed the Ambassador of Iraq, His Excellency Lukman Faily, at a roundtable discussion with fellow ambassadors from Chile, Czech Republic, Morocco and Singapore to discuss diplomacy beyond the nation-state with regards to the 2015 QDDR (Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review). Joining them in the discussion chaired by Atlantic Council President & CEO, Frederick Kempe was Hon. Paula Dobriansky and the Special Representative for the QDDR, Hon. Thomas Perriello.

US-Iraqi Youth Institute Holds Conference On Peace

Members and affiliates of the US-Iraqi Youth Institute with a host of community leaders and politicians met at Greenfield Manor on June 5, 2015 for the Iraqi American Peace Conference. This year’s theme was ISIS: Terrorism Against Childhood.

Groups of students with the organization, families with children, and political and community leaders from Detroit to Baghdad gathered in the main banquet hall for an evening of discussion, video presentations, dinner, and a closing awards ceremony.

Britain boosts Iraq military trainers to combat Islamic State

The United Kingdom will send an additional 125 military trainers to Iraq to counter the rising threat from the Islamic State, Prime Minister David Cameron said Sunday at the G-7 summit.

The prime minister's office said the military personnel were being provided at the request of Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi. They will chiefly help Iraqi forces learn how to deal with improvised explosive devices, or IEDs.
