President Barham Salih welcomed His Holiness Pope Francis’ initiative and intention to visit Iraq next year, remembering his meeting with His Holiness and the Pope’s support for Iraq's pursuit to promote the security of its communities and consolidate peace and stability among all Iraqi.

His Excellency highlighted the importance of developing security and military cooperation between the two friendly countries as well as the US contribution to arming and improving the military capabilities of the Iraqi security forces.

President Salih confirmed that he would approve early elections by adopting to the new electoral Law and a new Electoral Commission.

Addressing the Iraqis People on Thursday evening, President Salih said that, "The Prime Minister had agreed to resign, asking political blocs to agree on appointing an acceptable alternative, taking into their considerations the constitutional and legal contexts that would prevent a constitutional void."

President Salih welcomed today UN envoy to Iraq Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert.
The discussions at the meeting stressed the importance of the upcoming elections as well as the need to ensure the highest standards of integrity and transparency at all stages of the elections.

In the aim of enhancing confidence in the electoral process, achieving wide participation in the elections, and ensuring integrity and organization, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution No. 2576, to renew the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), until May 27, 2022.
The resolution contains strong elements, adopted for the first time to send a UN team to monitor elections in Iraq.

The Foreign Ministry expresses its most vigorous rejection, and its condemnation of the aggression that targeted Embassy of the United States ​​with Katyusha rockets.
