Ambassador Faily Statement on Developments toward Forming the New Government in Baghdad

Washington, DC (August 14, 2014) - Ambassador Lukman Faily today responded to the announcement that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki will forego a third-term and will support Prime Minister-Designate Haider al-Abadi’s efforts to form a unity government.

“Today's developments in Baghdad represent the firm commitment of all Iraqi leaders, particularly Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, to adhere to the constitutional timeline for forming the next government,” said Ambassador Faily.

“Democracy in Iraq is young, but our leaders are committed to building the government institutions necessary to ensure all Iraqis, regardless of ethnic, religious or regional considerations, are protected and provided for under the Constitution.”

“As Iraq's political leaders are now actively working to form an inclusive government, we look to the United States and our partners around the world to support the Iraqi people in their fight against the terrorists killing our citizens."
