Foreign Minister Meets with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

Foreign Minister Mohamad A. Alhakim met with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms Michelle Bachelet , on the sidelines of the 40th session of the Human Rights Council held in Geneva.

The two sides discussed ways to enhance cooperation between Iraq and the High Commission, Minister Alhakim expressed the appreciation for the important role taken by the Commission and stated the importance of supporting the efforts of Iraq in dealing with human rights since the government supports the efforts of the Commission, and calls for the launch of projects to address the challenges from a comprehensive perspective that addresses all developmental, social and political dimensions.

Minister Alhakim stressed that Iraq calls on the Commission to give priority to the needs of developing countries, and take into account the cultural specificity of the Arab and Islamic people.

Minister Alhakim also stated Iraq's interest in capacity-building with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to raise awareness of human rights issues at the national level.
