Iraq Presents United Nations with Hammurabi Obelisk Model at Official Ceremony

Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari met on June 25, 2013 at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva to donate a model of the Hammurabi Obelisk to the European UN headquarters on behalf of the Government and people of Iraq.

The Foreign Minister delivered a speech at the ceremony, saying:

"The Code of Hammurabi represent the oldest laws known to mankind which came from Mesopotamia to protect all layers of Babylonian society including women and slaves and aimed to protect the poor from the rich, and the importance of this law which was written and declared for the people to understand the laws that organize their lives unlike many other laws in other civilizations that were not written and has been subject to interpretation and represents the ideal model of legal means invented by mankind."
