THE PRESIDENT DISCUSSES WITH THE US SECRETARY OF STATE BILATERAL RELATIONS AND THE LATEST ARAB AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENTS

President Barham Salih received Mr. Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State, at the Presidential Office in Baghdad, Tuesday evening, May 7, 2019.
The President emphasized that the strategic partnership with the United States of America is essential for Iraq as the country is committed to its balanced policy that builds bridges of friendship and cooperation with all friends and neighbors, including Iran.
President Salih asserted Iraq's keenness to develop bilateral relations between the two countries and with the rest of brotherly and friendly countries in various fields.
His Excellency added that Iraq is building its relations with all countries on the basis of the priorities of its interests and is working to deepen the commonalities.
The President indicated that Iraq has returned to play its key role in the region, and is a place where everyone meets for dialogue and understanding away from disputes and conflicts.
For his part, Mr. Pompeo valued Iraq's efforts and role in the region as well as the country’s efforts to extend security and attract foreign investments and expertise, including the distinguished relations with the United States.
Ambassador David Satterfield, the Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs attended the meeting.
