Visas to Iraq

This section explains the requirements for obtaining an entry visa to Iraq for individuals that are currently in the United States. The Consular Section of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Washington, DC grants visas for individuals residing in the States that fall under its jurisdiction – Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia. For states that fall outside the jurisdiction of the Consular Section in Washington, DC please contact the Consulate that is responsible for your area for instructions and guidelines on how to obtain entry visas to Iraq.

Visa Application Hours: Monday – Friday, 10:00am – 12:00pm
Visa Pickup Hours: Monday-Friday, 1:00pm - 2:00pm

Important Notes:
  • Persons born in Iraq and are holders of foreign passports do not require a visa to enter Iraq.
  • US passport holders can obtain an entry visa to Iraq directly from Iraqi airports without obtaining prior approvals.
  • Kindly requested to keep in mind that some airlines require US passport holders of Iraqi origin to obtain an entry visa to Iraq when passing through other countries, which requires taking this into consideration before travelling.
  • The visa applicant’s passport must be valid for a minimum of six months.
  • Please use USPS, PRIORITY EXPRESS, UPS, UPS, and FEDEX postage.

Requirements for Obtaining Iraqi Visas for Iraqi Nationals Holding Foreign Passports

  • Complete the Visa Application Form, type the information requested into the appropriate spaces on the form and print the completed application.
  • Submit two recent identical front-view color photographs with white background measuring 2 inches × 2 inches (5 × 5 centimeters).
  • Color copy of Birth Certificate.
  • Proof of Iraqi origin is a must—copy of Iraqi Identity Card or Iraqi Nationality Certificate—of either parent.
  • Actual, undamaged passport valid for at least six months from the date the visa application is submitted.
  • Visas fees are waived for applicants of Iraqi origin.
  • Applicants must provide with their applications a valid phone number.
  • Submit your application to the Consular Section of the Embassy of Iraq in Washington, DC in person or via registered mail, along with a with an addressed pre-paid return envelope with sufficient postage.
  • Please be advice the Embassy will be only dealing with the following mailing Carrier USPS priority express, UPS.
  • The embassy is not responsible for any loss or damage due to any mishandling by delivery services.
  • Please allow Seven Business days for application to be processed.
  • Immunization records are required upon arrival to Iraq.

    Requirements for Obtaining Iraqi Visas for Foreign Nationals Married to Iraqi Citizens

    • Please note that this is visa applies to female applicants married to Iraqi citizens only.
    • Complete the Visa Application Form, type the information requested into the appropriate spaces on the form and print the completed application.
    • Submit two recent identical front-view color photographs with white background measuring 2 inches × 2 inches (5 × 5 centimeters).
    • Color copy Marriage Certificate authenticated by the US Department of State.
    • Proof of Iraqi origin is a must—copy of Iraqi Identity Card or Iraqi Nationality Certificate—of the husband.
    • Actual, undamaged passport valid for at least six months from the date the visa application is submitted.
    • Visas fees are waived for applicants of Iraqi origin.
    • Please allow two weeks for application to be processed.
    • Submit your application to the Consular Section of the Embassy of Iraq in Washington, DC in person or via registered mail, along with a with an addressed pre-paid return envelope with sufficient postage.

    Requirements for Obtaining Iraqi Visas for Foreign Nationals

    • Complete the Visa Application Form, type the information requested into the appropriate spaces on the form and print the completed application.
    • Submit two recent identical front-view color photographs with white background measuring 2 inches × 2 inches (5 × 5 centimeters).
    • Actual Passport and a Color copy of passport – passport must be valid for six months from the date the visa application is submitted.
    • A Color copy of Driver license (For Religious visa Requests).
    • An official letter stating the purpose of travel (visit, work…etc), duration of stay, and/or an invitation letter from Iraqi authorities, the host company, meeting or exhibition organizers in Iraq.
    • Applicants must provide with their applications a valid phone number.
    • Please allow 15 business days for visas to be processed. Applicants will be contacted once the embassy is in receipt of the approval from authorities in Iraq.
    • Approved applicants will be issued single-entry visas valid for three months from the date of issuance.
    • In some cases, multi entry-visas valid for six months and one year will be granted.
    • Applicants are then required to send – via registered mail – their passports along with an addressed pre-paid return envelope with sufficient postage along with a visa fee as shown below:

      $50 (fifty US Dollars) cash for single-entry visas ( the Embassy can only accept Cash) .
      $50 (fifty US Dollars) A Transit visa ( the Embassy can only accept Cash) .
      $50 (fifty US Dollars) A Visit visa ( the Embassy can only accept Cash)
      $50 (fifty US Dollars) A Religious visa ( the Embassy can only accept Cash) .
      $50 (forty US Dollars) A Tourist visa ( the Embassy can only accept Cash) .
      $100 (one hundred US Dollars)cash for multi-entry for (3-6) months maximum visas(the Embassy can only accept Cash) .
      $150 (one hundred fifty US Dollars) cash for multi-entry for one year visas ( the Embassy can only accept Cash) .

      Please Note: A Tourist visa (for US passport holder only) is $150 (one hundred fifty US Dollars) Multi-entry for one year only (Reciprocity Principle) and for US passport holders exclusively (This visa is not a permit to work or invest inside Iraq).

    Please note:
  • Foreigner workers are not allowed to work in Iraq without a work permit regardless who is sponsoring the project.
  • The investor must hire local workers with a rate not less than %50 of the total number of workers required for the project.
  • The project must have an investor permit issued by the Iraqi National Investment Commission or by Governorates of Investment commission, all parties must committed to the regulation that have been engaged upon the written contracts.

    Requirements for Obtaining Iraqi Visas for Diplomatic and Official Passport Holders

    • Holders of diplomatic or official passports travelling to Iraq on official business on behalf of the US Government, (including government agencies, contractors or congressional delegations) must apply for a visa before leaving the United States.
    • An official diplomatic letter from the US Department of State. This letter should specify your name, your position, your passport’s type and date and purpose of travel.
    • Please note that only official notes from signers appointed by the Special Issuance Agency are accepted.
    • No appointments are required for these applications. The requested documents may be brought by Special Issuance Agency carriers to the Consular Section of the Embassy of Iraq in Washington, DC any open business day between 10:00am and 12:00pm only.
    • Complete the Visa Application Form, type the information requested into the appropriate spaces on the form and print the completed application.
    • Color copy of passport.
    • Actual, undamaged passport valid for at least six months from the date the visa application is submitted.
    • Submit two recent identical front-view color photographs with white background measuring 2 inches × 2 inches (5 × 5 centimeters).
    • Diplomatic and official passport holders are waived visas fees for their application.
