Iraq says captures al Qaeda chemical gas team

(Reuters) - Iraq has captured a suspected al Qaeda cell that planned to produce chemical poisons such as mustard gas to attack Iraqi forces and to ship overseas for attacks on Europe and the United States, the government said on Saturday.

The announcement was made as investigators look into allegations over the use of sarin nerve gas in next-door Syria where rebels and President Bashar al-Assad's forces have blamed each other for using chemical weapons.

U.N. starts first aid airlifts to Syria from Iraq as cold grips

The United Nations sent its first delivery of humanitarian aid by air to Syria from Arbil, Iraq on Sunday and said it plans to deliver more food and winter supplies in the next 12 days.

The U.N. said two planes are expected to do 23 rotations over the next 10 days. The aid includes planeloads of food, for more than 6,000 Syrian families for the rest of December.

Iraqi President Meets US Ambassador, Matthew Tueller

On Tuesday, June 8, 2021, the President of the Republic, Barham Salih met with US Ambassador to Iraq, Matthew Tueller. The meeting took place at al-Salam Palace.
The close bilateral relations, and the mutual cooperation between Iraq and the USA across all the fields were discussed during the meeting. President Salih and the American Ambassador discussed how best to strengthen the prospects for further cooperation and where there could be further dialogue and functional commissions on strategic issues of common interest.
