Foreign Minister Mohamad A. Alhakim met with Chairperson of the Council of the Federation Committee on Foreign Affairs Mr. Konstantin Kosachev in Moscow on Thursday, 31 January 2019.

Minister Alhakim welcomed the activation of parliamentary visits between the foreign relations committees of the Iraqi Council of Representatives and Russian Federation Council and stressed the need to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries, pointing out that Russian support for Iraq was very important in defeating terrorism.

Foreign Minister Dr. Ibrahim Al-Jaafari met with British Secretary of State for Middle East and North Africa Mr. Alistair Burt on the sidelines of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The meeting reviewed the progress of bilateral relations between Baghdad and London and means of strengthening them to serve the interests of the two friendly peoples.

Foreign Minister Mohamad A. Alhakim met with foreign Ambassadors accredited to Baghdad. The meeting started by briefing on the latest developments in the local situation, especially the recent demonstrations, and the subsequent governmental actions towards implementing the legitimate demands of the demonstrators, in addition to reassuring heads of foreign missions in Baghdad of the stability of the security situation and providing security for all missions and their staff.

Foreign Minister Mohamad A. Alhakim inaugurated the Leadership Development training program organized by the Foreign Service Institute in the Ministry.

This training course comes within the framework of the Ministry’s efforts to carry out support programs and empowerment of women in Iraq, especially in the development of leadership and personal skills.

Foreign Minister Mohamad A. Alhakim and his Russian counterpart Mr. Sergey Lavrov held a meeting at the Russian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday, January 30, 2019, upon the visit of the Minister to Moscow.

Minister Alhakim stated during the meeting, "We presented an invitation to the Foreign Minister Mr. Lavrov, to visit Iraq on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries, and we will conduct cultural and political activities in cooperation and coordination with the Russian Embassy in Baghdad and our embassy in Moscow. Foreign Minister Mohamad A. Alhakim held a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Mr. Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Minister Alhakim expressed Baghdad's interest in promoting bilateral cooperation between the two countries in various fields.

Both sides reviewed the overall bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries, and the common willingness to strengthen these relations, as well as the latest developments in the regional and international arenas.

Foreign Minister Mohamad A. Alhakim gave Iraq’s speech at the meeting of Heads of State and Government of Non-aligned Movement and began by affirming the Iraqi government’s endeavor to implement the priorities of the government program for: security, law enforcement, services, education, health, good governance, building a prosperous economy, and raising the standard of living for the citizens.

Foreign Minister Mr. Mohamad A. Alhakim chaired the emergency meeting of the League of Arab States Council at the ministerial level to discuss the so-called (Deal of the Century) announced by US President Trump.

Foreign Minister Mr. Mohamad A. Alhakim gave Iraq’s speech on behalf of the President of the Republic at the 18th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement inwhich he called on Member States to join efforts in confronting the crises facing the region through the sound management of disputes and the adoption of the principle of dialogue in finding sustainable solutions and renouncing violence and extremism.
