On Wednesday, March 8, the Embassy hosted a workshop under the title ‘‘International Illicit Trade in Smuggled Antiquities". It was organized in cooperation with the Academic Research Institute in Iraq (TARII) and discussed: illicit trafficking of smuggled antiquities from countries of Eastern Mediterranean and West Asia; discussing ways to reduce such crime which causes great damage to the cultural heritage of countries, through cooperation between competent authorities to follow up recovery of antiquities in countries whose antiquities are subject to smuggling, such as Iraq, Egypt, Yemen... The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has responded to President Barham Salih’s call to move its regional headquarters to Baghdad instead of Amman.
The Organization announced the consent following a telephone conversation between President Salih and the Director General of the Organization, Ms. Audrey Azoulay, in cooperation with the Iraqi Ministry of Culture.

More than 1.2 million electronic voter e-cards have been distributed ahead of the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections in April, 2014.

The Independent High Electoral Commission announced the possibility of opening polling centers in 13 countries including the United States, allowing Iraqi citizens abroad the opportunity to cast their votes in the 2014 parliamentary elections.

When Iraqi tribal leaders were forced to flee the city of Hawija in northern Iraq as the Islamic State seized the area in 2014, they weren’t much concerned with advancing the rule of law. But last year, as ISIS’s grip weakened and the possibility of returning to Hawija grew nearer, the leaders faced the prospect of an aftermath stained by revenge killings of collaborators and demand for “blood money” in compensation. Such tribal justice could set off new rounds of violence and instability.

The Iraqi Ministry of Reconstruction and Housing has granted loans to around 41,000 Iraqis over the past two years to help them build new homes.
